MBFW 2012

Riding the ferry across the beautiful Sydney harbour, I arrived bright and early at this years Mercedez Benz Fashion Week. Held once again at the overseas passenger terminal Circular Quay, it was the perfect backdrop to see some Australia’s finest fashions for Spring/Summer 2012/13. My fabulous day was made possible curtiosy of HP Australia’s Fashion Exposed.

The first show was Akira Isogawa, held in the ‘Box’. This is a more interactive space where designers can show their collections more intimately to the audience, with the models standing on stages set up around the room. We had a bit of a wait before the show, but were told the delay was due to Akira arranging and positioning each model himself. The collection featured traditional Japanese silhouettes in bright shades of red, yellow and blue. Long kimonos, with paintily watercolour floral’s were paired with matching platform heels. I know it’s a cliche, but each piece was more like a work of art, with precise attention to every detail. As I wandered around the space, the last group I came to was the Bridal collection. These dresses were all white, each with intricate beading. Unfortunately due to the show running late I didn’t have too much time to enjoy these pieces, but what I did view was excellent. Models were made up with a simple red lip, and slicked back buns.

From Akira we all rushed to the ‘Theatre’ space, for “Bless’ed are the meek”. Chatting outside before there was definitely an air of anticipation, as apparently the laser show was produced by the same team who worked on the Sydney Olympic show in 2000. This was a totally different feel to the calmness of “Akira”, with pumping music, coloured lasers and a face paced walk by the models. The duo showed very wearable items such sequinned shorts, silk chiffon blouses, and an awesome pair of sky blue leggings. Slit open backs and side split tops were also featured. However, the definite show stopper was the blue and cream floral sleeveless suit. So fun and fresh, that’s one ill be hanging out for in the warmer months!
Models sported fishtail braided hair, with bronze glimmering makeup, giving a romantic and fresh sun kissed look.

The last show was a collection of up and comers, “New Generation 2”. This included Luela, Ash to Gold, LittleGracie, Lf Markey, Aanchal Chanda, Susan Rep and Uscari. Held in the “Tent’ area, this was an eclectic mix of different styles from each of the designers. My personal
favourite was Lf Markey. A very modern collection of men and women’s pieces, using strong bold patterns and block colours. The women’s pieces were quite androgynous with oversize shirts dresses, and slouchy trousers paired back with Doc Marten’s. The men’s pieces were shorts and collared shirts, with clashing patterns and a ‘Material Boy’ feel. Overall this was an excellent way to spend a Friday in Sydney. Viewing great fashion by the water in the sun, what’s not to like? All thanks to HP Australia, Fashion Exposed. We definitely have some excellent fashion to look forward to in the next few months…
